Cataract surgery

The natural lens is replaced by a modern lens

Lens replacement is an advanced procedure for treating cataracts and correcting refractive errors and presbyopia. The cloudy natural lens is replaced by a clear artificial lens so that you can see better again.

Finally see clearly again

The cloudy natural lens is removed and a clear lens is inserted.

images

The natural lens (dark brown here) becomes cloudy over the course of a person's life. This causes their vision to become increasingly worse. Vision becomes blurred and contrast perception decreases.

The artificial lens allows the light to pass through completely again. This means that you can see more clearly and finally have a high contrast again. With special lenses you can even become glasses-free.

The lens is replaced in 4 steps

The new lens is inserted in less than 10 minutes

images
1

Preparation

You will be given anaesthetic eye drops to make the treatment painless.

2

Distance

An incision of only 2mm is made through which the natural lens is removed.

3

Mission

The new artificial lens is inserted in place of the clouded lens.

4

Diploma

The incision is so small that it does not require stitches and heals on its own.

Advantages of lens replacement

Lens replacement brings many unique benefits.

Permanently

Once inserted, the artificial lens remains permanently in the eye.

Presbyopia

The new lens can effectively correct presbyopia.

recreation

Most patients can resume their normal activities within a few days.

Comprehensive

Corrects various visual impairments such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism if desired.

In our everyday life we have to see in 3 distances

With the natural lens we can only see clearly at one distance after the age of 50

images

Close distance e.g. for reading a book

images

Medium distance e.g. for working on the monitor

images

Long distance e.g. for driving

Two different options for all 3 distances

During cataract surgery, special lenses can be used to make you free from glasses.

Trifocal
lenses

images

Trifocal lenses have several focal points and thus enable sharp vision at a distance, in the middle range (e.g. computer work) and up close (e.g. reading). However, the multiple refractions of light also lead to increased optical phenomena. However, over 95% of patients get used to it within 6 months and are very happy with this option.

Monofocal
Plus
lenses

images

The Monofocal Plus lenses offer excellent vision quality at a distance and at medium distances. Light reading glasses are usually still required after the operation. In some cases it makes sense to adjust one eye for distance and one eye for close vision in order to be less dependent on reading glasses - so-called blended vision.

There is no perfect option that works equally well for all patients. Choosing the right lens depends on the individual needs and the characteristics of the eye. Selecting the perfect lens requires the utmost expertise, so lens replacement should only be performed by a true specialist in lens surgery

Frequently Asked Questions

We have summarized the answers to the most frequently asked questions here.

A lens exchange is a surgical procedure in which the natural lens of the eye is replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). The procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis and takes about 15-30 minutes per eye. First, the eye is numbed with anaesthetic drops. Then a small incision is made, the natural lens is removed and the artificial lens is inserted.

2. What are the benefits of lens replacement?

Lens replacement can offer several benefits, including the permanent correction of vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and presbyopia. The treatment can also prevent or eliminate cataracts. Many patients enjoy a significantly improved quality of life after the procedure because they no longer need glasses or contact lenses.

Lens replacement is usually not painful. Before the procedure, numbing eye drops are administered to numb the eye. You may feel a slight pressure during the procedure, but no pain. After the procedure, you may experience mild discomfort, but this will quickly subside.

Recovery time after lens replacement is relatively short. Most patients can return to normal activities the next day. However, it may take several weeks for vision to fully stabilize. During this time, regular follow-up visits are important to monitor the healing process.

As with any surgical procedure, lens replacement also involves risks and possible side effects. These include infections, inflammation, increased intraocular pressure and visual disturbances. However, serious complications are rare. During the consultation, we will inform you in detail about all risks and side effects.

A lens exchange is particularly suitable for people who suffer from severe visual impairment or presbyopia and no longer want to wear glasses or contact lenses. Patients for whom laser treatment is not possible or not sufficient can also benefit from a lens exchange. A thorough examination and consultation in our practice is necessary to determine whether you are a suitable candidate.

The artificial lenses used in lens replacement are usually lifelong. They are made of biocompatible materials that are well tolerated by the eye. After the procedure, no further corrections or replacement operations are usually required.

Trifocal lenses offer very good vision at all three distances (near, middle and far) and allow maximum freedom from glasses. Monofocal plus lenses, on the other hand, have better optical quality with fewer optical phenomena and allow very good vision at distance and in the middle range. The choice between the two depends on your individual vision needs and lifestyle. A thorough examination and consultation in our practice can help you make the best decision based on your specific requirements and vision habits.
