How PRK Works

With the precise excimer laser

The Many Names of PRK

Same Procedure – Different Approaches

The cornea consists of multiple layers. In PRK, the top layer (epithelium) is removed
to

reshape the underlying corneal tissue. Depending on the removal technique, different

names are used, but the actual laser procedure remains the same. Essentially, all these

names refer to the same method.

 Auge Nahaufnahme der Iris

The epithelium is loosened using alcohol and then fully removed.
It grows back naturally during the healing process.

The epithelium is loosened with an alcohol solution and pushed
aside. After the laser treatment, it is repositioned onto the
cornea.

A mechanical device lifts the
epithelium to the side before the laser procedure begins.

The epithelium is vaporized, and
the underlying corneal tissue is reshaped with the laser.

Frequently Asked Questions
About Laser Eye Surgery

PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) is a laser vision correction procedure
used to treat nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and
astigmatism. In this technique, the outermost layer of the cornea
(epithelium) is removed, and the underlying corneal tissue is reshaped using
an excimer laser to improve vision.

2. Who is a suitable candidate for PRK?

You may be a good candidate for PRK if you are over 18 years old, have had a
stable prescription for at least one year, have a thin cornea and are not
eligible for LASIK, and do not have serious eye conditions like keratoconus
or glaucoma. A comprehensive pre-examination will determine if PRK is the
right option for you.

The PRK procedure is performed in several steps. First, you receive numbing
eye drops to ensure comfort. Then, the outermost corneal layer (epithelium)
is removed, either mechanically or using a special alcohol solution. Next,
an excimer laser reshapes the cornea to correct vision. Finally, a soft
contact lens is placed on the eye to protect it while the epithelium
regenerates. The total procedure time is approximately 10–15 minutes per
eye.

During the PRK procedure, you won’t feel pain due to numbing eye drops.
However, moderate discomfort or pain may occur after the procedure, as the
cornea heals. These symptoms usually last a few days and can be managed with
pain relievers and eye drops.

Recovery from PRK is longer compared to LASIK or SMILE. During the first few
days, discomfort and a foreign body sensation typically subside within 3–5
days as the epithelium regenerates. In the first week, the protective
contact lens is usually removed after about one week. Over the first few
months, vision gradually improves, and it can take up to three months for
full stabilization.

PRK offers multiple advantages. It is ideal for patients with thin corneas
who are not suitable for LASIK. Since no corneal flap is created, PRK
eliminates the risk of flap-related complications. Additionally, PRK
provides long-lasting results, offering permanent vision correction without
the need for frequent adjustments.
